Service Learning: a springboard for global citizens at Nam Can Tho University

In the current era of globalization, it is crucial to not only equip students with specialized knowledge, but also with soft skills and a sense of social responsibility. In light of this, Nam Can Tho University has incorporated the Service Learning model into its curriculum, offering students the chance to learn while engaging in community service activities. This not only benefits the community, but also enhances the students’ personal growth.

What is Service Learning?

Service Learning is an educational model that integrates learning with community service, providing students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and specialized skills to real-world social activities. This approach not only enhances students’ understanding of their lessons, but also fosters the development of crucial skills for both work and life, including teamwork, communication, and critical thinking.

Service Learning allows students to apply their classroom knowledge in real-life situations, developing specialized skills such as critical thinking and leadership abilities. Furthermore, through community activities, students acquire essential soft skills for life and work, including effective teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

Service Learning is a valuable tool for developing a strong sense of social responsibility and understanding the importance of contributing to one’s community. It also helps to strengthen the relationship between the university, its students, and the community by promoting a deeper understanding and shared awareness of the issues facing the  community.
Nam Can Tho University has successfully implemented a variety of Service Learning projects that have proven to be beneficial for both students and the community. These projects have included:
– Conducting basic computer classes for underprivileged children
– Providing scholarships and gifts to disadvantaged children
– Constructing playgrounds for children at kindergartens and primary schools
– Organizing environmental protection activities to promote the creation of “Green – Clean
–  Beautiful” landscapes
– Visiting and providing gifts to families facing difficult circumstances
– Supporting localities in implementing new rural development and advanced rural development criteria
– Establishing free MC and reception training classes for students
– Hosting legal education sessions on important topics such as drugs, traffic safety, and HIV/AIDS,…
