Overview
The Climate Action goal is one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aimed
at addressing climate change and its impacts. The main objective is to enhance resilience to climate
change and build the capacity to withstand its effects, such as storms, floods, droughts, and rising
sea levels. Key targets include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing climate policies and
plans, and integrating climate change adaptation measures into national policies, from government
authorities to local communities.
NCTU recognizes that one of the most concerning impacts of climate
change is salinity intrusion in agricultural lands, particularly in the Mekong Delta. Salinity
intrusion in this region results from several factors, including drought, rising sea levels, and the
construction of upstream dams on the Mekong River. More worryingly, the flow of water from the upper
Mekong River into the region has been below the long-term average, and the severity of salinity
intrusion also depends on the timing and volume of water released from upstream hydropower
reservoirs.
