In the context of the Mekong Delta facing increasingly severe climate change, saltwater intrusion, and water source pollution, Nam Can Tho University (NCTU/DNC) has proactively implemented numerous specific action programs, creating strong connections between the university, students, and the community. In 2024, NCTU’s series of water protection activities not only contributed to addressing urgent environmental issues but also affirmed the university’s commitment to the journey toward sustainable development.
Planting trees along mangrove forests – The “Green shield” of the Mekong Delta
In the coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta, NCTU students and faculty have participated in numerous volunteer trips to plant trees in mangrove forest areas. This is a long-term meaningful activity that helps protect coastlines, limit erosion, and preserve freshwater sources. The rows of young trees growing on saline soil are not only evidence of NCTU youth’s volunteer spirit but also serve as a “green shield” contributing to protecting the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Collecting plastic waste from rivers – Restoring purity to waterways
With the message “Return the Green River,” NCTU has collaborated with local authorities to implement multiple campaigns collecting plastic waste from canals and waterways. In 2024 alone, this activity processed over 338 tons of plastic waste, contributing to clearing waterways, reducing pollution, and restoring environmental landscapes. The enthusiastic participation of hundreds of volunteer students has created positive effects, encouraging the community to join hands in taking action for clean water sources.

Agricultural waste sorting – Protecting groundwater
In specialized rice cultivation areas, NCTU has implemented programs to sort and collect pesticide packaging. This activity helps limit the random disposal of toxic chemicals into the environment, thereby reducing the risk of soil contamination and groundwater infiltration. Through this program, residents not only gain access to safe agricultural waste treatment methods but also raise awareness of sustainable production, linking environmental responsibility with cultivation processes.

Advocacy against illegal aquatic resource exploitation – Preserving marine resources
Not stopping at direct water protection activities, NCTU has also strengthened advocacy and community education efforts. In coastal areas, numerous seminars and communication sessions have been organized to warn about the harmful effects of illegal aquatic resource exploitation and guide sustainable fishing methods. Through this, residents have raised their awareness, contributing to marine environment protection and maintaining aquatic resources for future generations.

Affirming the pioneering role of NCTU youth
With the accompaniment of faculty, students, and the community, Nam Can Tho University’s water protection activities have been and continue to strongly spread the spirit of social responsibility. Not just stopping at short-term campaigns, NCTU aims to build a long-term, sustainable foundation to protect the environment, contributing alongside local areas and the entire country to effectively respond to climate change challenges. This is also one of the university’s important efforts in implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 14: Life Below Water, SDG 15: Life on Land, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
